Can not keep a good team down for a long time and in the case of Sir John Franklin High School Falcons, was only a matter of time.
The Falcons are once again the best track team in the Northwest Territories after capturing the title of great added on June 3 at the NWT Track and Field Championships in Hay River. Total team score of 12.85 points was enough to claim victory. It was a year ago when the Falcons had to see St. Patrick High School on foot with the title, the first time in a long time had passed.
Madison Hurst, who won the overall title in the junior men's division, said the team wanted the title back.
"That's ours," he said. "We've worked hard for it, practice a lot and I think we deserve this."
The overall title queue is determined when you take the total number of points a team wins and is divided by the number of athletes from a team. Sir John Franklin scored 539.75 points from its 42 athletes, giving them complete victory.
Coach Mark Kilbride said winning is nice, but he only wants the children to enjoy the moment.
"I do not want to come to their expected win," he said. "I just want kids to get off and do their best. Winning is just icing on the cake, I guess."
Hurst himself had a great meet as he won the junior men and 200 titles of 400 meters, along with the high jump, where he tied a record 24 years of age, in this case with a jump of 1.85 meters.
Because the weather during the event was so unpredictable and cold, the high jump took place inside and Hurst said he would have liked to have made out.
"In fact, I bought the tie for this year and I really did not bring indoor shoes with me," he said.
Because of that, he had to go and borrow a pair of indoor shoes from a St. Pat’s teacher in order to compete properly.
"I do not know if that made a difference," he said.
Hurst had three cracks at hitting the record, but not in three attempts.
He said that the link was not good enough, but deep down, he wanted the disk.
Tayla McNally Mildred Hall was a great event for herself in the bantamweight division girls as she won the overall title, broke three records on the road and in the 100 and 200 meter events and also shot the ball cock girls. Jaillet Elianto Allain St. Cyr was also a big winner in the PeeWee girls division, winning the overall title in the process.
She said her teammate Catherine Giachino, helped to push to victory.
"Last year, took third place and I have first, but I think I got lucky this year," he said. "I think I pushed a little harder because of it."
Allain St. Cyr as a school scored 523 points, third overall among all teams in this year found.
