LUCKNOW: A 35-year-old man threw a slipper at Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal at Jhulelal Park here on Tuesday evening. A few days ago, another Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan was attacked inside his Supreme Court chamber in New Delhi.
Kejriwal was about to address a gathering when the incident took place. The slipper missed him narrowly. Kejriwal said he had pardoned the man and asked the police not to register any case against him.
The man, who claimed to be a former head of Congress Sewa Dal's Jhansi unit, was identified by police as Jitendra Pathak, a native of Jalaun district. After his failed attempt, Pathak was roughed up and handed over to the police by people assembled there to hear Team Anna members.
Pathak reportedly told policemen that he had come to Jhulelal Park with a handwritten anti-Anna speech and slogans. He said he wanted to speak from the dais and that he contacted Sanjay Singh, one of the organizers of the NGO, India Against Corruption. Singh apparently refused to allow him to speak, Pathak told the police and that he vented his anger on Kejriwal only after this incident.
Earlier, Pathak said he was angry with Kejriwal and Team Anna because they were campaigning against Congress despite Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assurance that a strong Lokpal Bill would be enacted in the winter session of Parliament.
Kejriwal said he pardoned Pathak for his act as "Anna Hazare says that a person should tolerate personal humiliation but never tolerate humiliation of the nation. There are larger issues before us than taking action against a misguided youth".
Pathak has been living in Lucknow for some time now with a contractor from Azamgarh, at his house in Indiranagar. Pathak told police that he also worked for the contractor.
